Thermal Transfer Ribbons and Carbon Strips for Printers

To achieve a permanent and smudge-proof label, choosing the right thermal transfer ribbon is critical. These ribbons, also known as carbon strips, use heat from the printer’s head to transfer ink onto the label surface. Depending on your label material and required durability, Barcodes24.eu offers three main ribbon grades.

Which Ribbon Grade is Right for Your Business?

The choice of ribbon directly affects print quality and resistance to environmental factors:

  • Wax Ribbons: The standard choice for paper (Vellum) labels. It is the most economical solution, ideal for general-purpose logistics and shipping labels.
  • Wax/Resin Ribbons: These provide higher resistance to smudging and scratching. They are versatile and work well on both paper and various synthetic labels.
  • Resin Ribbons: The most durable choice for harsh environments. These ink ribbons are used with synthetic labels (PP/PE/PET) that must withstand chemicals, moisture, or extreme temperatures.

Our selection includes various winding types (Ink-In or Ink-Out) and widths to match your specific printer model. If you are looking for the right base material, browse our adhesive labels to ensure perfect compatibility with your chosen ribbon.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How do I know if my printer requires a ribbon?
If your printer uses Thermal Transfer technology, a ribbon is required. If you are using direct thermal (heat-sensitive) labels, you do not need a ribbon.

2. What is the difference between Ink-In and Ink-Out?
This refers to which side the ink is coated on. "Ink-Out" (CSO) is common for Zebra printers, while "Ink-In" (CSI) is used by some Datamax or Sato models. Using the wrong winding will result in no print appearing on the label.

3. Why should the ribbon be wider than the label?
The ribbon should be slightly wider than the label to act as a lubricant, protecting the expensive printhead from direct friction with the label edges and extending its lifespan.
